Comparing The Taming of The Shrew to Dreamgirls
After your title comes your intro description, which should include the following info: - names of the play and your movie selection, plus an introduction to the characters you're talking about and their basic situation. - a thesis statement that compares/contrasts the movie and the play. You it should be clear which focus area you're zooming in on from the intro paragraph--set the reader up to understand the scene(s) you'll be presenting! Taking a look at the movie Dreamgirls it has become a modern day Shakespeare play, more precisely like The Taming of the Shrew. The way that the love unravels and the ravels up again in the movie is just like the play. Needing to get rid of one woman in order to have the other one. In the movie Deena(played by Beyoné) Effie(played by Jennifer Hudson) and Curtis(played by Jamie Foxx) are just trapped in this big love triangle. Not only is love a problem here but the music plays just as big as a role in the movie and compares to the way Katherine and Effie both felt about their sister. Jealousy and rage have its way of moving in toward the family.
After you have the intro, it's up to you how you organize your film stills and quotes. I chose to alternate between the play and the movie, starting off with the play. Put the play quotes in BIG FONT to give the reader something to latch on to. And remember to give enough CONTEXT in your captions for each quote and picture, or else the reader will be confused!
Katherine:
A pretty peat! It is best
Put finger in the eye, and she knew why
"Quote from Play"
(Act 1, Scene 1, 79-80)
A few sentences go after quote, including sufficient CONTEXT that tells the reader what's going on in "Shrew," and also a bit of ANALYSIS linking to your thesis.
In this part of the play the suitors were informed that no one could marry Bianca until the eldest sister, Katherine, was married first. The way the conversation was going between the men and Katherine was listening she was upset and with that came the quote that she said. SHe was basically calling Bianca her dad's favorite, but Bianca tried to reassure hire sister that she was perfectly fine with just her music instruments. You then TRANSITION into your comparative scene from a movie. Include a transition sentence and then put in the screen shot:
Effie is just as mad as Katherine was when she,Effie, was told that Deena was going to sing back-up IMAGE GOES HERE
After the screen shot, you need to do the same thing that you did for the quote from "Shrew" -- sufficient context that describes what's happening in that scene, and analysis that connects back to your thesis (and states what the comparison and/or contrast is to "Shrew.)
In this part of the movie Effie was told that she wasn't going to be singing lead because they are going to be on t.v and Deena has that appeal that society looks at. Effie was shocked and amazed at what she had just heard. The fact that Curtis and everyone else had agreed to this also made Effie even more upset. She knew she deserved that part and wanted it to be known. Just like Katherine had said that Bianca was "a pretty peat" Effie let it known that she was quite upset what Deena had done.
Then, you need a second (and possibly a third) set of comparisons: play, movie. Play, movie. Don't forget to use a larger font! Bianca:
Sister, content you in my discontent.-
Sir, to your pleasure humbly I subscribe.
My books and instruments shall be my company
On them to look and practice by myself.
(Act 1, Scene 1, Lines 81-84)
In this part of the movie Deena was trying to let Curtis know that he didn't agree with the changes that were going on, she didn't want to take the lead spot singing from Effie especially the way that they found out about it. Deena was almost like Bianca in this because she let Curtis know that she rather not have this part, and that she was fine singing back-up. Deena tried to make it so Effie was singing lead but in the end she still ends up having that lead role. Finally, you need your CONCLUSION. This paragraph should specifically mention BOTH the play and the movie, and touch on the central question of the assignment:What do these portrayals show us about society's attitudes towards courtship/dating? In the play Katherine was being forced to be married so that way her younger sister Bianca could get married first. She was pissed at the fact the Bianca was considered the "pretty peat" or in other words the favorite pet/child and had to rush her life in order to make sure Bianca's was okay. Bianca even stated that she would just fine with her music instruments, but that wasn't good enough for anyone else. Also in the movie Effie and Deena were always compared or in some way at neck and neck with each other. Deena ended up getting the lead role to sing and even though she didn't want to take it, it caused so many more problems as the movie continued to go on, whether it was on stage, in the love life, or just trying to agree on little things. In both stories the younger sister seem to have more going them, based in looks, and their personality. As each story continues it seems that the sisters get the up hand of the problem while the older sisters just continue to deal with something they rather not.
